Donald Lee Martin Jr., of Cumberland, was served a criminal summons at the Allegany County Detention Center, where he remains held without bond, the Maryland State Fire Marshal announced on Tuesday, March 4.
The charges stem from an incident on Saturday, Feb. 15, when staff at the Cumberland YMCA reported that Martin deliberately damaged a fire sprinkler in a stairwell.
The vandalism triggered severe flooding in the facility’s administrative section, leading to an estimated $65,000 in damage, according to officials.
Deputy State Fire Marshals investigated the incident and filed charges on Friday, Feb. 28. Martin was officially charged on Monday with malicious destruction of property over $1,000, causing a false fire alarm, and maintaining a fire hazard.
Martin was already behind bars on separate arson charges for setting fires in his own apartment at the YMCA before this incident.
He is also facing additional charges, including arson threat, threat of mass violence, and first-degree assault, related to an incident last month at Rose’s Discount Store on Queen City Drive, police said.
The Cumberland YMCA serves as a transitional housing facility for unhoused individuals and families.
